The Perfectionist, Heathrow T2

It’s here, finally, Terminal 2’s big revamp! We arrived with plenty of time to peruse duty free and fill our bellies.

Normally you’ll pop into a generic chain before boarding your flight, not really anything worth writing home about.

Not this time, this time it was definitely worth writing about. Hence, this post.

One of the eateries available is The Perfectionists cafe by Heston Blumenthal. A new addition to Heston’s restaurants, no ridiculous waiting lists, reasonable prices and a menu full of casual classics. Stalls line the bar for lone travellers, snugs row around the outskirts and comfy 50’s style booths sit in the centre, all with sweeping views to the gates below and out the three storey windows to the runway.

We started with a few drinks to kick off the holiday. I love getting above the clouds, so gravitated towards the cocktails in the clouds and decided upon the bramble. It came out with its very own cloud of merlot vapour, leaving a rich wine smell.

The drink itself is sweet and fruity, leaving just a hint of earthy merlot.

Dad and Mark went for fish and chips. The batter is aerated through a syphon (a u-shaped tube – don’t worry, I googled it too) to make it perfectly crispy and an atomizer filled with cider vinegar gives the classic chippy aroma, spritz it lightly over your fish and chips – that way you keep your chips crispy, unless you like soggy chips, then drench those bad boys in it!

Mum and I went for a board of Jamon, Iberico Bellota & Salami, or just a board of Bellota in mum’s case from the deli menu, a bit more parred back, simple, but equally delicious. With just enough room for something sweet we couldn’t resist the course that made the man famous his nitro ice creams. Frozen at -196°C in liquid nitrogen to create teeny tiny ice crystals for an extra creamy ice cream!

I went for the BFG, now it may not be quite that which Roald Dahl had in mind, but I would say it stays true to being “a nice jumbly giant” of a dessert. However, in this case the BFG is referring to the Black forest gateaux, decadent, sweet and drizzled in a sharp cherry sauce.

Mum and the brosef opted for delicious nitro ice cream, which comes in a waffle or wafer basket with three toppings of choice, and there’s a helluva choice.

Popping candy, Raspberry crunch, Dulce crunch pearls, Marshmallows, Yoghurt popping candy, Chocolate coffee beans, Caramel wafer crisps, Oreo cookies, White chocolate pearls, Chocolate shavings, White chocolate shavings, Milk chocolate pearls, Crystallised rose crisps, M&M’s, Strawberry sauce, Chocolate sauce.

By Jove he’s done it again! Heston’s brought gastro to the masses through his crazy imagination, at a reasonable price and all in time to catch your flight.
